Hair Wraps

Hair wraps are a fun project for you to do with your kids, or for your kids to do with each other or their friends. You might also want one of your kids to give you a hair wrap for a casual weekend or celebration like Mother’s Day. You probably don’t want to wear it to your job as a loan officer, but they are simple enough to do for just a one-day wearing.

You will need a few colors of regular embroidery floss (we’ll use three here) and a small elastic or rubber band. To start, braid a tiny section of the other person’s hair (so the braid measures about 1/8 inch thick.) Secure the end of the braid with the elastic or rubber band.

Now measure three colors of embroidery floss about five times as long as the braid. Hold the strands together and tie them around the top of the braid. Hold two strands of the floss against the braid and separate out one color.

Wrap the single strand around the braid and the other pieces of floss and send the end of the floss through the loop to form a single knot.

Keep doing this until you have a stripe of color as wide as you want it. To change colors, lay the single strand against the braid, and separate out another color. Start knotting just as you did with the first color.

Alternate colors until you reach the bottom of the braid. Remove the elastic or rubber band. You can stop here so you have a little bit of hair sticking out at the bottom, or you can keep knotting to hide all the hair. Tie all the ends together at the end and trim any extra floss.

You can experiment with different colors and patterns. It’s fun to match an outfit or use holiday colors, such as black and orange for Halloween or green and red for Christmas.
