Halloween Books

Here’s some more fun seasonal books to share with your children.

Clifford’s First Halloween by Norman Bridwell

I’ve always liked these tiny baby Clifford books more than the giant grownup Clifford ones. Baby Clifford is cute and gets into lot of mischief. In this Halloween story, Emily Elizabeth wants to find a costume for her puppy. Finding one small enough is a real challenge. She ends up using a Kleenex to make him a ghost costume. They go trick or treating, but also have a party at their apartment. Clifford gets stuck in taffy apples and Emily Elizabeth has to give him a bath in a bowl. At one point, Clifford gets stuck in a glove. A flashlight is behind him, so the glove casts a strange shadow that scares all the party goers. I like this book because it has such a funny mild scare. The illustration makes it obvious that the ghostly glove is really a small puppy, so the small child listening isn’t frightened.

The Pumpkin Patch by Margaret McNamara

This is a charming tale of a first grader, Katie, who goes on a field-trip with her class. She is very excited, knowing that she will find the perfect pumpkin. She takes her time, rejecting some as too big. Finally, she finds a small pumpkin that pleases her. Her classmates laugh at her tiny pumpkin. Katie feels bad for picking it. She comes home to tell her father that she picked a bad pumpkin. He helps her transform it into a pumpkin pie which she shares with her class. I like that her father is so caring, involved, and creative. It’s a great seasonal book for people who don’t celebrate Halloween. This is an early reader book with only a few sentences per page. It’s also a good read aloud.
