Halloween Chaos

There is something about Halloween that lends itself to chaos. It seems no matter how prepared I have tried to be over the years, or how much planning and careful scheduling I have put in to making sure the holiday runs smoothly—it is always a mass of last-minute changes, chaos, and flexibility. I think I should like to blame all the candy for all the chaos, but I think it is really the very nature of the holiday that does it!

Last minute costume changes, last minute costumes, replacing treats that have run out, party plan changes, school parties, work potlucks, sound familiar? I think I’ve gotten fairly used to it so I didn’t even start to cease up last night when one of my daughter’s came to me with the quintessential last-minute Halloween question: “Mandi wants to be a ghost but her mom won’t let her mutilate one of their sheets, I told her that I was sure you’d have something she could use. Could you look and leave it out for us if you go to bed before I get back from the choir concert tonight?” Never mind that I might not WANT to donate an old sheet to the Halloween cause anyway (like Mandi’s mom) and besides, didn’t I do that last year too?

It doesn’t seem to matter how old they get, or how old I get, Halloween just seems to lend itself to flying by the seat of one’s parental pants (or on one’s broom, I suppose.) The more kids, the more chaos and I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t go away once the kids seem like they should be too old for Trick or Treating. And it doesn’t seem to matter how much prior planning I do to try to ward off the last minute craziness. Fortunately, experience has taught me to be ready for anything…I’m ready…let’s just see how I’m feeling tomorrow morning!
