Halloween-Themed Boredom Busters for Kids

left

A visitor far creepier than Jason, Freddie or Norman Bates is about to storm the East Coast just in time to potentially ruin Halloween for millions of young trick-or-treaters.

Hurricane Sandy is threatening to put the kibosh on All Hallows’ Eve festivities up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Residents are hunkering down in preparation for the big blow. Government officials predict some people could be without power for days in the wake of the vicious winds, rain and snow associated with the super storm.

So what does this mean for parents whose children will be enjoying an unexpected hiatus from school? In addition to stocking up on water, food, batteries and toilet paper, you might consider loading up on craft supplies, so you can knock out these Halloween-themed boredom busters designed to keep your kids busy and your sanity intact while Sandy makes landfall:

Haunted House: Transform inexpensive mini wooden birdhouses into spooky haunted houses. With a little black paint and a few creepy embellishments, you can craft an entire village of scary homes. If you want to skip the messy paint, cover the houses with Halloween-themed scrapbook paper or have kids use permanent markers to draw on scary designs.

Mini Mummy: Collect a bunch of empty toilet paper rolls. Wrap each in gauze bandages and glue in place. Next, glue on googly eyes, and allow to dry. When you are done you will have a family of mummies to add to your Halloween display.

Monster Cups: Have your kids decorate a paper cup with paint or markers in Halloween colors (black, orange, green, purple, etc.). When the paint is dry, embellish each cup with glitter, jewels or stickers. Next, have your kids draw their favorite monster on a small piece of paper and glue it to a Popsicle stick. Cut a slit in the bottom of the paper cup and slide the stick through to hide the monster. Kids can then push up the stick to have the monster to pop up.
