I’ve always been a bit wary of teenage trick-or-treaters. Then again, Halloween is a time when older kids should have fun too.
So what do you do if your older children want to have a ball on All Hallows’ Eve, but you want to keep an eye on them while they do so?
The answer: Host a Halloween party with age appropriate activities, such as:
Costume Contest: This easy event is great fun for kids of all ages. Let your teenage guests select winners in a variety of categories, from scariest costume to cutest and most creative. Then, hand prizes to the top picks.
Scary Movie: If you have a smaller crowd that doesn’t want to dance the night away at a homemade Monster Mash, then set up a haunted theater in your basement and play a series of scary movies. Feature some classic horror flicks and some newer ones, and don’t forget to stock the viewing area with comfy chairs and plenty of snacks.
Video Games: If your teenage guests are into gaming, then nix the movie idea and set-up an area where they can play Wii or a variety of interactive horror games.
Haunted House: Creative parents can really get into the holiday spirit by designing a Haunted House in the garage, basement or living areas. You don’t have to create a Hollywood production; rather, go basic with dim lighting, a spooky soundtrack and have some costumed characters jump out at unsuspecting guests as they make their way through the maze of terrors.
Pumpkin Carving: Set out a bunch of pumpkins, some carving tools and other decorations and let your teenage guests go wild creating their own jack-o-lanterns. You could have a contest to select the best of the best or simply have each guest take home his or her creation as a parting gift at the end of the night.
