Handmade gifts can make the perfect Christmas gift especially for that hard to buy for person – you know the one I mean who seems to have everything. Nearly all of us know someone like that and it can be stressful trying to think what to give them. So why not give then something you have made yourself. Food products are nearly always welcome.
In our food blog, you will find suggestions of slices, cookies and chocolates you can make. For those with a wheat and gluten allergy, many of them are gluten free. Don’t just put the gluten intolerant person into him too hard to cook for basket. They’re not really.
As well as slices and chocolates, another idea might be herb vinegar or herb oil. To buy these they can often be quite expensive but there is no reason why with a bit of time you can’t make them yourself. They’re not hard.
Herb Vinegar
Ingredients
2 cups slightly crushed fresh herb leaves. You might include mint, parsley, basil, marjoram, thyme, or basically whatever you have growing or can buy inexpensively.
4 cups vinegar (If you are using it for a person who is gluten free you will need white vinegar that as no malt in it.)
Method
Wash herbs thoroughly. Pat dry gently with absorbent paper.
Place in sterilized jars.
Fill jars with vinegar. Seal and leave 1-2 weeks. (See there’s plenty of time before Christmas to get going with this.)
Strain liquid through a double thickness of muslin into an attractive bottle. (Sometimes coffee jars have an attractive appearance.)
Place a sprig one or two of the dried herbs used in each bottle and seal.
Label your gift with a handmade decorative label telling your recipient what is in the bottle or jar.
How easy is that!
Over the next little while I will be sharing ideas for more handmade Christmas gifts.
