Hands-On Fall Travel Fun

School is back in session across the country, including for kids who don’t have to travel very far to get lessons in reading, writing and arithmetic.

Yes, homeschool students are also back hitting the books this fall, though most enjoy way more field trips than students at traditional schools. In fact, the months of September and October are some of the best times for homeschool parents to take their kids to visit educational destinations.

While most clans are staying put because the new academic year has just begun, homeschool students are free to tour some of the best hands-on learning facilities in the country, including these family-friendly attractions in Maryland:

Fort McHenry

The star-shaped fortress turned museum is a must-see attraction in the Baltimore area, especially given its place in American history. Fort McHenry is where Francis Scott Key watched the British attack Baltimore during the War of 1812. In fact, it was that experience that inspired him to write The Star-Spangled Banner. The museum is overflowing with hands-on history lessons for kids of all ages and offers several outstanding scenic spots where you can gaze out at the Baltimore Harbor and contemplate what transpired on the hallowed grounds centuries ago.

American Visionary Art Museum

If you are looking to infuse your family’s trip with some educational experiences I would highly recommend stopping by the American Visionary Art Museum. Located at the base of Federal Hill, this new national museum and education center is home to dozens of original works of art created by self-taught artists. The facility boasts seven art galleries, an outdoor wildflower sculpture garden and, the world-famous Joy America gourmet restaurant.

Baltimore Museum of Art

One of the city’s most popular attractions is the stunning Baltimore Museum of Art. Most visitors come to gaze at the Cone Collection of Modern Art, which includes works by Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne and van Gogh. What’s more, admission for kids under 18 is free.
