I had a lot of fun reviewing “Hannah and the Seven Dresses” the other day, so today I’m reviewing another book by the same author.
In “Hannah’s Collections,” we see that Hannah loves to collect things. Everything is a treasure – and I do mean, everything. Her room is really cluttered with all of her things, and when her teacher asks the children in her class to bring in a collection to display, Hannah doesn’t know what to do. She has so many collections – how will she ever choose which one to bring?
For instance, she has 153 buttons, and she’s saved the stick from every Popsicle she’s ever eaten. She has 43 seashells, 19 feathers, and 10 leaves. She has 14 barrettes, and two dozen little toy people.
Did I mention that she collects jewelry? That’s right, she does. She has 5 rings, and sometimes she wears them all at once!
With so much to choose from, the decision seems overwhelming, but Hannah put her mind to it and came up with a great idea. She took a tray from the kitchen and gathered up glue, tape, thumbtacks, and string. She then took some items out of each of her collections, and spent the entire weekend on her idea.
What did she do? She made a sculpture out of a collage of all her things, and now she can show a little bit of everything to her class without having to choose just one thing.
The best part of this book is the illustrations. They are photographs of actual objects – paperclips, coins, rings, barrettes – and Hannah herself is made from real cloth which is then photographed. You feel like you could just reach in and touch the textures in the photos.
(This book was published in 2000 by Dutton Children’s Books and was illustrated by the author.)
