Happily Married Caucasian Women Sleep Better

Have you ever heard the saying “never go to sleep angry”? Well it seems that many women tend to follow this rule. I know that when I have a lot on my mind it can be very difficult to get a good night’s rest.

A recent research study shows that women who have better marital lives also sleep better. Many women tend to worry and get less sleep when things are not right with their lives or their marriage.

The study was carried out by Wendy Troxel from the University of Pittsburgh. It was conducted with 1938 married women. They had an average age of 46 years old.

Fifty-one percent of the women were Caucasian, twenty percent were African-American, eleven percent were Japanese, and nine percent were Hispanic with nine percent also being Chinese.

The participants had to report their happiness with their marriage along with their sleep patterns. They made note of any troubles falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up early in the mornings. They also recorded any marital troubles or arguments that they were having.

While it was concluded that martial stress and poor sleep go hand in hand, this only held true for the Caucasian women.

The women who reported being happily married, fell asleep easier, faster, and stayed asleep longer.

While it seems very logical to me that a less stressed life of any type would lead to better sleep at night, I am confused about why the other races of women did not seem to be affected their martial stress.

The research study did not go into detail on why only the Caucasian women’s sleep seemed to be greatly affected by the stress level in their marriage.

The study suggested that women need to get a good seven or eight hours of sleep each night.
