Shiny, happy people – do you remember this song? I’ve been racking my brain all morning trying to remember the name of the group that sang it without actually looking it up on the net. Sometimes I think the ease with which we can Google something takes all the fun out of trying to remember something. Yes, it can be frustrating trying to capture that elusive thought that seems to dance just out of reach – but as frustrating as it is – I have fun trying to sort through the card file that is my brain chock full of its trivia.
Happiness is a Key
Happiness is a key for all kinds of things – it’s why we strive to work hard to pay our bills and to enjoy time with our family. When we’re happy, we’re more successful in all kinds of ways. Happy people are healthier. Happy people are more productive. Happy people are more likely to meet their goals.
This seems like a no brainer, but according to Joe Vitale, the author of The Attractor Factor and Life’s Missing Instruction Manual – happiness is the missing ingredient in succeeding in your personal fitness goals and weight loss. In fact, he states categorically that those who are happy are going to burn more calories than those who are angry or depressed.
It Makes Sense: Happy People are More Active
What do you do when you are depressed? Do you sit and eat? Do you sit and watch television? Do you sit and stare at the weather outside and wonder why you can’t get yourself into a better mood? Do you go for a run? Do you go for a walk? Do you clean your house? The more depressed and upset you are, the more likely you are to not be active.
When you’re happy and feeling good, you’re going to get up and get out there and be active. People who work out and exercise regularly are regularly releasing endorphins that lift their mood, but also make them happier overall. Vitale focuses on this concept in his books because he discovered the keys to his personal fitness and weight loss success by emphasizing his happiness rather than just his diet or exercise plan.
Get Trimmer by Getting Happier
So what makes you happy? Do you enjoy playing sports? Do you love to dance? Do you love to ride horses? Find what you love, find what makes you enjoy your time more – in fact – that’s one thing that makes me happier – not working 16 hours a day – so I set a time table for every day. I work for 9 hours and that’s it – after that – whether that ninth hour comes at 2 pm. or 9 p.m.
I like to spend time with my daughter and I am happier when I am not sitting there thinking about work or all the things I need to be doing when I am doing things with her. So I put time management to work for me. I have lists that have to be accomplished and those are the things that I do. I don’t let myself deviate. I also only check my email three times a day to avoid getting caught up in trying to answer every single piece that comes into my box.
So – with all this in mind – what makes you happy?
