Happy Halloween (or Harvest!)

halloween party

Whichever you celebrate, if you celebrate this date, I hope you have a happy one! My younger kids were excited as they rushed off to school, treats in hand, to share during their fall parties today.

Many schools don’t have Halloween parties any more, and some no longer allow kids to dress up in costumes for Halloween either. Our school has a fall party but no costumes. I have even heard of several small towns in this area that would like to ban trick-or-treating altogether as well.

It wouldn’t really bother me, but I know some would miss it. I’m not a big Halloween person, given some of its connotations, but I do remember it being an exciting time when I was a child. It makes me kind of sad to think that some kids will never know what it was like.

Saf-T Pops Halloween candyAlas, it seems that these days there are more safety rules than Safety Pops.

Actually, it’s “Saf-T Pops.” Do you remember ‘em?

While Halloween safety rules are certainly important, it seems that the world we live in has changed a lot since we’ve grown up. There didn’t seem to be so many worries back when.

Now that we are no longer kids, and have kids of our own, the world looks a lot different. I’ve noticed the costumes have grown much scarier, more evil looking, gory, and creepier, too. Some of them just scare the stuffing out of little kids. There is such a thing as too much.

Perhaps we can use various Halloween safety tips to help our kids enjoy the rites of passage, safely. Going out in groups, with adult supervision is a good start. There is no reason we can’t still have fun; we just have to take some precautions.

My youngest much prefers the Harvest party at church anyway. It’s safe and fun and they ask people not to wear truly hideous costumes, out of courtesy to the small children. She’s much more comfortable in that setting, so that’s what we do. It starts with “trunk of treating” in the parking lot and then inside there’s a funfair with food, games, and prizes. There is usually a hayride near the end, followed by hot cocoa.

Be prepared and don’t be scared! The ghosts and goblins will soon be gone and the only thing we will have to fear once the Halloween candy is gone is facing leftover pumpkin pie. With real whipped cream!

It’s He-e-e-e-r-e…
