I admit it, my kids are the only kids on the block that know what a fluffernutter is. I must be clear too and say this sandwich will not win any awards for being healthy or low in sugar content. But a fluffernutter sandwich is just about the quintessential American childhood sandwich of days gone by.
If you really don’t know what a fluffernutter is, it is fresh white bread, marshmallow spread known as Fluff and peanut butter. This super sugary concoction is delicious and absolutely necessitates a glass of milk. Since you’re already feeding the kids all that sugar, you might as well throw the nutrition book out the window, and make that a chocolate milk.
But for more sophisticated palates, I thought I might offer a little flare to the traditional fluffernutter sandwich:
The Fluffernananutter
If you can say that you get a gold star. Add a little banana in between the layers of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter. It might nutritionally redeem the sandwich slightly.
The Fluffernutter Milk Shake
Add a giant tablespoonful of peanut butter to vanilla ice cream. Blend until creamy and smooth. Stir in marshmallow ice cream topping. If you’re up for a super rich treat, use Friendly’s Forbidden Chocolate ice cream instead of plain vanilla.
The Fluffernutter Sundae
Add marshamallow ice cream topping to peanut butter ice cream. Top with whipped cream, miniature chocolate chips and a few extra mini marshmallows for good measure.
Fluffernutter Brownies
Make a brownie mix according to package directions. Before baking, swirl your favorite peanut butter into the batter. Bake the brownies according to the package directions. Immediately after removing the brownies from the oven, sprinkle with marshmallows. You can put them back into the oven for just a few minutes to melt the marshmallows if needed.
Easy Fluffernutter Pie
In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of peanut butter with one package of softened cream cheese and ½ cup of sugar. Gently fold in a container of cool whip until the mixture is even. Pour the mixture into a chocolate crumb crust. Put the pie in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Top with Marshmallow Fluff.
To make the best fluffernutters, use the best peanut butter!
