As many of you know, the bloggers were on a break for a little while. They came back right about the time I left for vacation so if you’ll allow me, I am playing catch up. I hope you enjoy some delicious waffles–even if we did miss International Waffle Day!
March 25th is International Waffle Day. I thought that International Waffle Day was simply a day to bask in the fluffy goodness of well made waffles. However, after doing my research I’ve discovered that this day is shrouded in controversy and conspiracy. Okay–maybe there’s no conspiracy. But breakfast experts everywhere ‘waffle’ over the exact date and definition of International Waffle Day. (Pun totally intended!)
However, Mr. Breakfast has set me straight. Apparently, there are two days to celebrate the waffle (the edible and delicious noun as opposed to waffle–the wishy washy verb). The first is International Waffle Day which originated in Sweden. The second is National Waffle Day and as best I can tell is actually the result of a mistake made by a teacher who had a series of lesson plans on unique holidays. The lesson plans were widely circulated on the internet and voila–now we have our own National Waffle Day. So I guess, if you want to start your own food related holiday the way to do it is widely circulate erroneous but interesting information on the internet. However, if you’re passionate about waffles (the breakfast food) read on!
International Waffle Day
International Waffle Day was started in Sweden. It’s date is significant on two counts. First, it is always March 25th, nine months before Christmas. In theory this means that it is on the date that the angel told Mary that she would be mother of Jesus. (For the life of me I can’t figure out why this is celebrated with waffles?!) It is also the beginning of spring–a time in which Swedish women turn their attention from their winter chores of knitting and chopping wood to their spring time chores of. . .waffle making. (Honest to goodness folks–I’m not making this up.)
Regardless of when and why you celebrate waffle day, check back tomorrow when I’ll share our family’s favorite waffle recipes and some delicious toppings to go with them.
