I’m not talking about the season of harvest that comes each year. I’m talking about a harvest that is year round. It’s a harvest of souls in need of the Savior. Unfortunately, this harvest is in grave need of workers!
“But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’” (Matthew 9:37-38)
As I look around town, I see so many who appear weary, not just physically, but worn down mentally, emotionally and spiritually too. When the people in verse thirty-seven where described as scattering like sheep without a shepherd it made me think about the people running to and fro; running errands, meeting deadlines, juggling kids, a job, a home and don’t feel like they have anything left to give. Continuing on with such busyness without rest in Christ will continue to wear anyone down mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
I really believe we as Christians are the laborers that the Lord would have for the harvest. How do you convince someone who is so used to living their life the way they do that they need a savior? Those who haven’t known what that true perfect peace is, that which passes all understanding, may have a hard time desiring it. I wonder if it almost sounds too good to be true to some? My hope is others will look at the lives of Christians and see the fruits of the Lord. I pray others will hunger for that same joy and rest that comes only from Him.
So where is it you might be called?
- If you’re reading this on the internet, this might be one place you can start. The internet is much less threatening for non-Christians because they can walk away and turn off their computer if they wish. They can choose to read or not to read. They can respond under a different identity and speak their mind in ways perhaps they couldn’t otherwise. They can do all this in the privacy of their home. There are many with questions and perhaps YOU might be that person who can help them!
- How about through your church? Many churches have ample opportunities to support you in reaching out in your community helping others. Many churches also offer mission trips to reach out and help people abroad. Maybe your church could use a greeter. It might be your smiling face that makes an unbeliever feel welcomed enough to hear a message of hope in the sermon.
- Prayer! Don’t underestimate the power of faithful prayer. God hasn’t stopped hearing the prayers of His children. Pray for those who are lost, hurting, needy, hungry, scared. Pray the Lord would put the right person in their life. Ask God to give you an opportunity to touch someone’s life.
- What about community outreaches? You don’t have to be working in a Christian environment to reach the lost. You will likely have more opportunities at your place of employment or in other secular social settings to reach people. Just let your light shine.
Be open and willing for the Lord to use you for His glory.
God bless you.
