Want to make some extra cash? Why not host a virtual garage sale?
There are many benefits to hosting a virtual garage sale compared to your average, normal, put everything out on the front law, type of sale. First of all, you won’t need to haul all of your stuff outside; second, you don’t have to worry about the weather; and third, you can take your time sorting and selling your items. A virtual garage sale may even give you a better monetary return for your stuff.
What is a virtual garage sale? Well, basically, you showcase your stuff online instead of on the lawn. Potential customers can view the items at their convenience. Yes, it is sort of like eBay, but without the fees, the auctioning, etc.
How can you get started? Well, first I am going to assume that you have your stuff organized, priced and ready to go, or at least organized. Take photos of everything. This is very important. Feel free to group items in the photos, if you wish.
Next, find somewhere online to showcase your stuff. You can do this on your website or blog, or try a free photo sharing site that allows you to upload your photos and post a brief description of the item. Make sure your description is compelling. “Downy soft queen-sized comforter in shades of blue and green” sounds a lot better than “Queen-sized comforter for sale.” And don’t forget to include the price and a way that shoppers can easily contact you.
Next, start advertising. Post a free ad on craigslist, put the link to your sale in your e-mail or forum signature, and send out e-mail to friends and family telling them about the sale and asking them to pass the information along. Putting a newspaper ad in the classifieds with a link to your virtual sale is also a very good idea. Many garage sale shoppers peruse the classifies and are exactly the type of audience you want to reach.
In my next article about virtual garage sales, I’ll share some advice and tips on the special considerations of a virtual garage sale, as well as how to make sure your sale is a success.
