Have Fun at the Airport

It is possible. Of course, “fun” is a relative term.

Whether your time at the airport is self-imposed or you got slammed by an airline like me (Bitter? Maybe.), then you might find the following information quite helpful.

Believe it or not there are airports that are helping passengers pass the time with fun events, amenities and activities, such as:

LAX

Foodies have one more reason to welcome a layover at Los Angeles International Airport. Pink’s, the legendary Hollywood hot dog stand, just opened a branch of the popular eatery in the pre-security food court at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. In addition to regular menu items, passengers can also dine on a special LAX International Dog, chosen from among dozens of “recipes” submitted by airport employees.

Another must-visit area of the airport is the viewing deck, which is now open weekends, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The area had been closed for renovations, but now you can kill time at LAX by using free telescopes, which offer great views of airplanes taking off and landing, the airport grounds and the surrounding areas.

SFO

Leave your heart at the San Francisco International Airport this summer. Here’s how: Catch the live music series the airport is hosting this summer. Performances take place each Friday through August 28 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at three different stages in the airport.

YVR

Vancouver International Airport got a major facelift prior to the 2010 Winter Games. In addition to the new views passengers have fun at “Take-off Fridays” this summer, which include meal specials, music and kid-friendly activities.

You’ll also find new shops and eateries at Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport, General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Meanwhile, you can get cultured at Terminal B at Mineta San Jose International Airport. The airport is now home to more than a dozen pieces of interactive, high-tech art, including a fish tank that watches you and a 26-foot-tall “Space Observer” with propellers for arms and cameras in its antennae.
