Have you heard of the Burqini? I hadn’t until a reader sent me a note a couple of days ago and asked me about it. It didn’t take much research to find out more about it. First and foremost, it’s not teenie-weenie like the old advertisements used to promote the greatness of the bikini, but I think it’s likely one of the better fashion achievements of its type.
The Burqini is exactly what it sounds like a cross between a bikini and a burqa. The fact that it’s designed for swimming is the only resemblance it has to the two tiny pieces of scraps that make up a bikini. It’s designed specifically for Muslim women who have not been able to take advantage of water sports and aquatic exercises because their values prevent them from showing more than their face, hands and feet in public.
The Design of the Burqini
The design of the Burqini provides a woman with a polyester suit that comprises the pants and long-sleeved thigh or knee length top. The head covering is made of similar material and has uv-protection qualities as well as water repelling ones. Currently, the burqinis out there that are available come in many different Arab designs and colors.
The Burqini was designed by an Australian named Aheda Zanetti. She began producing the Burqini because Muslim women were not able to enjoy the same freedom at public pools and elsewhere. She strove not only for a good look, but also a practical one that would make it comfortable for these women to wear and to swim in.
The Burqini is great for young Muslim women who are required to participate in swimming sports at their schools as well as for Muslim mothers who want to join their husband and children in the swimming pool, but resisted the urge because they didn’t have the right attire for it.
While you can’t find the Burqini in retail stores yet, you can buy it online for about $200 New Zealand) which is roughly $138 U.S. I’ll bring you more information as I find it out. If you have purchased a Burqini, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it with regard to use and comfort. Have a great rest of your weekend!
