H.B. Moore’s “Out of Jerusalem” Series

Hey, I’m an avid reader. I don’t deny it! I can’t! But sometimes it’s hard to find new authors that I really enjoy and have a burning desire to buy their next book. I found one.

Oh yeah, I almost feel like I located the Golden Fleece. My home has stacks and stacks of books. One room, my office, with floor to ceiling, wall to wall bookshelves, is fully stocked with books. There are bookshelves in the bedrooms, living room, family room and piles upon piles of books artfully (or so I believe) arranged where they won’t fit into bookshelves. I know books. I write books. And so when I say I’ve found an author I truly enjoy? Oh yeah, it’s worth listening to.

My husband has been sick. I had lots of time to sit by his hospital bed, praying and reading. I exchanged two of my books with H.B. Moore’s two books, “Out of Jerusalem: Of Goodly Parents” and “Out of Jerusalem: A Light in the Wilderness”. First, I have to say I’ve always been a little hesitant to delve into historical fiction based on the people of scripture. I don’t know why. I can’t explain it, I just have. Wow, was I wrong! I couldn’t put these books down.

The stories just grabbed me from the beginning. Although very familiar with Lehi and his family’s sojourn to the Promised Land, for the first time the colors, smells and depths of emotion were skillfully woven around very plausible plots as these stories came alive. I couldn’t put them down. I have been up as late as 4:00 a.m. tending to my husband and grabbing every second of sleep I could get in between. These books kept me up until midnight — twice — willingly!

I can’t recommend H.B. Moore’s work enough. I anxiously await the third book in her installment series. Hit your local store, Amazon.com, your local library — but get these books and you won’t regret it.

So H.B. Moore is one of my brand new favorites. How about it? Which LDS authors do you enjoy? Which are your favorites and why?
