Heading South

When you think of spring break what immediately comes to mind?

Most people typically think South Padre, Fort Lauderdale, and Lake Havasu. However, if you are trying to avoid half-naked, drunk college coeds partying it up next to your sand castle-making kid, then you might consider heading south, minus the mayhem.

South Carolina is an amazing spring break destination for families. The state is home to Myrtle Beach and miles of pristine shoreline. From para-sailing and jet-skiing to kayaking and surfing, the area’s waterways and ocean access are hard to beat. South Carolina also offers a plethora of land-based attractions, including Myrtle Waves Water Park, Family Fun Amusement Park, Medieval Times, Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” Museum and Magiquest, a 20,000-square foot arena that hosts live-action fantasy games.

Charleston, South Carolina, is also a magnet for vacationers, especially history buffs. Your kids will enjoy hands-on educational fun while navigating the USS Yorktown. The massive aircraft carrier played a pivotal role in World War II and in Vietnam. In addition, the legendary vessel served as the recovery ship for the Apollo 8 space mission.

Also in Charleston is iconic Fort Sumter. The floating landmark is known as the birthplace of the Civil War. The island is located at the entrance of Charleston Harbor and is accessible via public ferries. When you’re done with your water tour, head over to the historic Edmondston-Alston House. Located on Charleston’s High Battery, the awe-inspiring mansion provides you with a glimpse of what life was like in the early 19th century. Completed in 1825, the towering structure offers breathtaking views of Charleston Harbor and beyond.

Finally, for nature lovers, Charleston’s James Island County Park Campground will have you wishing that spring break could last forever. The 643-acre park is located just 10 miles from the beach and offers deluxe campsites with grills and fire pits. There’s also a fully stocked campground store where you can purchase groceries, toiletries, ice, firewood, and propane. The campground also boasts water activities, as well as miles of open meadows and paved trails perfect for cycling, jogging or walking.
