When an adult person stands only 4’10” or less, they are referred to as a dwarf. The medical term for a dwarf is achondroplasia. Most dwarfs, however, are generally 2’8” to 4’8” tall.
The cause of dwarfism is usually related to genetics, although some types are of unknown origin. The typical occurrence of dwarfism is due to a random mutation from either the egg or the sperm. Their parents are usually normal in size. Their children have received one mutated copy of the gene that causes dwarfism and a normal copy of the gene. A dwarf, therefore, has a fifty per cent chance of having a child of normal size or a child that is the size of themselves.
The symptoms of dwarfism vary due to the many medical conditions that cause it. However, there are two general categories that this condition may fall into. The first type is known as disproportionate dwarfism. In this type of dwarfism some of the body parts of the person are small with others being of an average or above average size. The other type of dwarfism is known as proportionate dwarfism. In this type of dwarfism all of the body parts are small in size. Most of the people who have disproportionate dwarfism are of normal intelligence, whereas some of the people who have proportionate dwarfism will be mentally handicapped.
Through careful measuring, measuring of the developmental capabilities, genetic testing, imaging, and hormonal testing your child’s pediatrician will be able to diagnosis the condition of achondroplasia.
Treatment for dwarfism is dependent on several factors. Some surgical treatments or hormonal therapy can be done in some instances. Medications may also be indicated in the treatment of some forms of dwarfism. However, medications are usually only to alleviate some of the discomfort that plagues dwarfs due to complications that they may suffer from.
The road that the person afflicted with dwarfism travels is difficult. Modifications to the home are usually in order to help them gain more independence.
Due to their disabilities a great deal of emotional support is needed. Organizations are available for this type of support and are encouraged.
