When you work from home, you have an opportunity to fit nutrition and exercise into your schedule more than you would if you worked outside of the home. Of course, on the flip side of that, your work area is probably within an easy walk of your kitchen. You know, that room where all of that tasty food is kept. If you love food as much as I do, you will have to exercise some will power in order to keep yourself from cooking and eating all day long.
Here are a few tips for avoiding the temptation to indulge in overeating and mindless snacking when you work from home. One thing that I have found helpful is to keep snacks in the house that I can take out of the kitchen and into my office. Things like string cheese and fruit are already pre – portioned so they are easy to grab and go. A while ago I purchased some containers so that I could put nuts, trail mix, grapes, and other snacks into portion sized containers that could easily be taken out of the kitchen when I needed them. These pre – portioned snacks that I take from the kitchen to my office keep me from lingering in the kitchen where I could easily munch on much more than I need to. As an added bonus, they are easy to toss into the diaper bag when I go out with the kids because Dylan often gets hungry while we are out.
Exercise is something that one would think a home – based professional could get plenty of, considering that they have control over their schedule. Of course, home – based professionals are also human and can fall into a pattern of prioritizing other things over exercise, especially work. I try to get my exercise by playing outside with my kids, but that does not seem to be enough. It’s time to put exercise on the schedule just like work assignments and other appointments so that it actually gets done.
