Have you watched a Heath Ledger movie since his untimely death was announced Tuesday? If you have you aren’t alone. I’m sure it comes as no surprise to anyone that Ledger’s tragic death has spiked sales and interest in the films that made him a star.
According to Amazon.com, three of Ledger’s movies were listed among the 25 best-selling DVDs on the website as of last night. The top seller of the three is Ledger’s 1999 comedy “10 Things I Hate About You” and his 2001 period action flick “A Knight’s Tale.” Others have been purchasing copies of 2005’s “Brokeback Mountain” – the one movie critics agree was the 28-year-old’s most notable role and the one that earned him an Oscar nomination, not to mention a chance meeting with the mother of his only child.
Meanwhile, Ledger’s latest film “I’m Not There,” in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan, is at the tail end of its theatrical run (it’s currently playing in about 50 theaters). The lone theater it remains playing at in New York is the Film Forum, which has been screening the movie since it was released in November.
Ledger’s next big screen appearance will be in the latest installment of the “Batman” series, “The Dark Knight.” It is scheduled to be released this summer. It was Ledger’s last completed project. In it Ledger plays the Joker, and his dark, twisted take on the villain has been the main focus of the film’s promotional campaign. Since Ledger’s death, more than seven million viewers have visited YouTube to watch trailers of “The Dark Knight.” And according to company officials, one million have watched a clip of an interview where Ledger discusses the Joker role.
At the time of his death, Ledger was just six weeks shy from wrapping “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus,” a $30 million film directed by Terry Gilliam. Ledger completed shooting scenes in London just three days before his housekeeper and a masseuse discovered his body in his Manhattan apartment Tuesday afternoon. The actor was scheduled to resume filming in Vancouver, British Columbia yesterday. As of Thursday producers had not announced whether the film would continue or not.
