Hello Oscars, Goodbye “TRL”

It’s your chance to see your favorite stars up close and personal.

If you have ever dreamed of snapping a photo alongside George Clooney or getting Tom Cruise to sign one of your body parts, this is it.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just announced that 300 bleacher seats will be up for grabs in an online lottery. Beginning at 9 a.m. PDT Monday, September 22, 2008, you can enter for a chance to win a seat in front of the Kodak Theater for the Oscar telecast, which is scheduled to take air February 22, 2008.

Stargazers need to act quickly though, the lottery, which allows you to register for up to four bleacher seats along Oscar’s red carpet, ends on September 28th. Last year more than 20,000 fans applied for the chance to catch a glimpse of Hollywood royalty.

GOODBYE “TRL”

I don’t need the demise of another show to make me feel any older than I already do. However, I can’t help but feel a bit melancholy learning that MTV is killing off a show I used to watch because of its age.

According to execs at the popular cable music channel, “Total Request Live” will soon shut down after 10 years on the air. The show will reportedly conclude with a two-hour special, which will air in November. And while producers insist this is not goodbye for good (the executive producer of “TRL” categorized the show’s unplugging as “taking a break”) TV insiders say it’s unlikely “TRL” will return to the airwaves without getting a major overhaul first.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the show when it debuted in September 1998 (by then I was well, well past the target audience age), but I would occasionally tune in when a big star would drop by. Plus, I enjoyed then host Carson Daly’s sardonic, laid back style. “TRL” has long been a place where musicians, movie stars and celebrities went to promote their new music, movies and other projects. It’s also the spot where fans could see their favorite celebs live and uncensored. It’s where Mariah Carey showed off her “crazy” side right before she checked in to a local hospital for help with her mental state and it’s where rapper Eminem started more than a few fistfights in an attempt to “defend his honor.”

I know that there are a slew of teens out there that will miss “TRL” more than I will (honestly, I haven’t watched the show in years). Still, it’s always sad to close the chapter on a show that has made such a huge impact on a single generation.

Are you a fan of the show?
