Help Your Toddler Avoid the Flu

Flu season is here, and this year it seems to be especially nasty. It is no fun to get the flu as an adult, and I cannot even imagine what it feels like to a toddler. Of course, parents want to do all that they can to help their little ones (and themselves) stay well during flu season. Here are a few things that you can do to increase your chances of getting through the season flu – free.

Making sure that your toddler gets plenty of rest and eats a balanced diet are things that are important every day, not just during flu season. If these things are consistently present in your toddler’s life during this time of year, his body will be better able to defend against the flu and other illnesses than if he is tired and not eating well. Bedtime and meal time can be challenging for toddlers and their parents, but they are also important as part of the overall picture of your toddler’s health. That means that if you have to choose your battles with your toddler, hold firm about bed time and eating right and let things slide a little in other areas.

Another easy, stay – healthy tip is to wash your toddler’s hands frequently. Many toddlers actually enjoy washing their hands, so make regular trips to the sink throughout the day, especially before eating and after you return home from being out anywhere. Use warm water and some soap, and make sure that your toddler washes for twenty seconds or more, getting both the fronts and backs of his hands. You may even want to make up a silly song that lasts twenty seconds, to sing while washing.

Also, when you are out in the community going to the store, visiting friends, or doing things where other people are around, be mindful of whether there are any obviously sick people sneezing and coughing everywhere. Some people do not stay home and rest when they are sick. Unfortunately, these people could be anywhere. It is not possible, nor is it desirable, to remain home all winter and avoid contact with people. Simply being observant when you are out and about, and making a hasty exit when you see someone who is sick, can help you and your toddler to avoid getting sick.
