Helping Children Memorize the Books of the Bible

Memorization can often be a frustrating task, even for adults. Children could certainly use some help regarding the memorization of the books of the Bible (there are 66 books after all). (Actually many adults could use some help regarding the memorization of the books of the Bible too!)

Here is an activity that I developed to help the children in my Bible school class learn the books of the Bible. You will need just a couple of simple materials. First, you need a strip of paper with each book of the Bible written on it (I printed it out on the computer). Secondly, you need tape or some other way to fasten the strips of paper the wall (you will need wall space large enough to place the entire 66 books of the Bible).

This activity has several “layers” or “levels” to help in the memorization of the books of the Bible. This activity could be done in one day or over a series of days. First, simply hang the strips of paper in order for the children to see. I then suggest singing each of the two songs (“Books of the Old Testament” and “Books of the New Testament”) a couple of times, pointing to the books as they are sung. Next, remove just a few random books of the Bible (I would stick to the Old Testament or the New Testament rather than mixing them) and have the children “help” you place them back where they belong. Once again remove a few random books of the Bible, but this time let the children be completely in charge of placing them back in the right place. Repeat this activity for either the Old Testament or New Testament (whichever was not done the first time). Next, block the books of the Bible on the wall and sing the songs a couple of times. If the children seem to be doing well with the songs, then move onto the final step in the activity. Remove all the strips of paper from the wall (keeping the Old Testament and New Testament separate). Let the children place each (the Old Testament and the New Testament) in the correct order.
