Helping in the Vineyard: Virtual Service

Looking for easy ways to serve in the church? I ran across an interesting tweet the other day about a website where you can find ways to give service. The link was attached to LDS.org, so I was curious about what it was, and how it works. The website is vineyard.lds.org and it looks to me like a way that the church is trying to utilize the millions of members that it has that are computer savvy and would like to do something to move forward the missionary work of the church.

How does it work? When you go to the website, you will use your church ID login and password. Next, you look at a list of activities that you would like to help with. Some of the activities include:

Translating documents
Watching YouTube videos and leaving comments

Write reviews on chapels in Google search so that they get a better rating
Helping others learn how to use genealogy websites
Adding image search words to photos submitted by members

These are just a handful of activities that are listed. I find it very interesting that the church is constantly looking for ways to increase its online presence. Media is at the center of all of our lives, and it is obviously one of the main focuses of the church’s missionary work as well. I would never think that watching a YouTube video is helping to spread the gospel, but when you think about it, it really can.

Under each activity, there are FAQ’s that explain what the activity is, and why it is necessary to do something like watch a video on YouTube. As the church continues to grow, there will inevitably be more activities added to this list to spread the word about the church online. It is a way for the average latter-day saint who is sitting at a computer at work all day, or has a popular blog to spread the Gospel by using these media resources for a good reason. To further the work of the Lord.
