Helpless Husbands

Sometimes when reading, I come across husbands who haven’t the first idea how to even turn the washing machine on, let alone sort and actually do the laundry. Then there are husbands who cannot cook a meal, but would exist on take out if the wife was away, or husbands who cannot use a vacuum cleaner or … the list goes on.

The thing is it doesn’t only happen in novels. I know women whose husbands are like that. Now maybe it’s the fault of the older generations when women stayed home and did all these things and men didn’t have to lift a finger. I don’t know. What do you think?

My husband can certainly do all the things I’ve mentioned and iron his own shirt. Not that he does it all the time, but the point is he can and he does when necessary, or when I’m busy or if he’s not busy doing other things. He’s not helpless. If I am away at a conference, which is not often, he can cook his own meals and look after himself and our family when they were younger. Sometimes he even likes to get into the kitchen and cook just for fun. He has a couple of particular specialties in the kitchen, which I’ll tell you about one time in the food blog.

When I was pregnant with our second child, I was under doctor’s orders not to sweep or vacuum or do a lot of things around the house. As a result, Mick and our young son took over all these responsibilities without complaint.

Of course with some husbands it is a ruse designed to make the woman think she’s indispensable. ‘If I pretend to be helpless and not know how, she will go and do it.’ Or there’s this one, ‘If I don’t do it to her satisfaction, she won’t expect me or ask me to do it again.’

Join me tomorrow for more about husbands, wives and household chores.
