Hidden Dangers

Keeping a home is more than just making sure everything is in order and the laundry is caught up. It is about more than decorating and using the best cleaning products. It is also about safety.

Did you know that your home has hidden dangers? Let’s look at where some of those dangers are lurking.

How often do you clean out your lint trap in the dryer? You should do this every time you change a load. And you might want to take it a step further and vacuum out the filter chamber. A buildup of lint can lead to a fire.

Do you have mold? You may have it and not even know. Look for areas in the home that may have damp spots, such as the basement or closets. Mold is an enemy to those with asthma. But it can also cause other health problems.

Where do you store your cleaning supplies? All cleaning products should be kept out of the reach of children and pets. It’s not enough to put a poison sticker on the bottles. Make sure they aren’t accessible to children.

What about your medications? They should be stored in an area that children can’t get to. You should also make sure your medicines have kid-proof lids.

Do you own a carbon monoxide detector? This odorless gas is toxic and deadly. So make sure you not only have working fire detectors in your home but carbon monoxide detectors as well.

Fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors should be on every level of your home. But make sure they are in areas where you can hear them when sleeping. You can buy these detectors as stand-alones or they sell combination kinds.

Hidden dangers are lurking throughout the home. To uncover all of them, take time to walk through each room and determine if there are safety issues. Then take measures to correct them.
