High school students have a lot of pressure on them today. They are expected to know exactly what it is they want to do with the rest of their life. With all of this pressure, they often forget to slow down and explore their options. High school is a wonderful time to try new things and learn new skills. High school is all about new experiences and self-discovery. If your child is all stressed out about the rest of their life, they may miss out on the opportunity before them.
There are certain requirements that every student must meet in order to graduate and receive their diploma. There are certain classes that must be passed in order to meet these requirements. In the end, however, every student has the opportunity to take a number of electives. These electives vary from school to school and are an excellent way for students to learn new skills and explore their possible interests. Students don’t know what they like until they have the option to try something. This holds true with everyone. How do we know if we like something or are good at it if we never tried it? Simply put, we wouldn’t.
Students at my high school have the opportunity to take a variety of classes to find out what it is they are interested in. For example, we offer fashion design, cooking, computers, ceramics, and police science. We even have the only working high school farm in the United States. At the farm, we hold a variety of agriculture classes. It is a full working farm complete with all types of farm animals. Since my school is in the Central Valley, which is full of agriculture and dairies, students get a first-hand knowledge of whether or not they would enjoy that type of work.
High school should be a time for your child to discover their interests and learn new things. Electives are a great way to do just that. Encourage your child to take advantage of these electives and try something new. They just might find a new interest and discover what they want to do with the rest of their life.
