As high school reunion time rolls around each year I hear the same conversations. There are those people who absolutely cannot wait to get back and talk with friends. They are right in the middle of all of the planning and meeting. Then there are people who know that they will not be attending and have no desire to do so. People have very different views on their high school years. I think that one factor in determining if you have an enjoyable high school career is involvement. People who are more involved in their high school activities are happier with their high school years than those who do not participate in any activities.
There are so many dangers and wrong clubs and activities for our children to become involved in. Most children feel the need to have a belonging among their peers. It is our duty to make sure that they are involved in positive, uplifting activities. Most high schools offer a variety of adult supervised activities for students to participate in.
There are many ways to be involved. Sports are usually the activity that most people think of when they think of high school involvement. However, today’s schools leave many more options. In addition to sports, high schools now have debate teams, academic clubs, social clubs, and Christian clubs. There is an activity for most every student.
Many high school students work after school and on weekends. They may feel that they do not have time to be involved in their high school activities. While this is likely true when it comes to playing sports, there are many clubs and organizations that do not meet as often as a sport activity or that meet during school hours. If you have a student that would like to get involved in school but is unsure which activity to choose, have him meet with the guidance counselor and discuss his schedule and interests. The counselor will be able to help determine which activity will best suit his needs and time. High school can be a very fulfilling and enjoyable time in a teenager’s life.
