High School Prom

My wife and I were chaperones for high school prom this year and we weren’t going to deprive our son of the experience. Weeks earlier my wife had picked out a baby-sized tuxedo for our little gentleman-in-training and we were finally going to see how he would look in it. Following every other experience I’ve had with my son, he looked better than I did. While both of us were wearing tuxedo’s Mommy had purchased a slick and shiny black dress to reveal her newly trimmed physique after lots of exercise. She looked like she could single-handedly solve the national deficit (more than “a million bucks”).

The three of us really did look quite nice together and we headed off to the event. Our son tends to get sleepy during trips and subsequently fell asleep on the way there. I was sweating as the temperature had risen in recent weeks and the sun was still hanging in the sky. We were headed there for a pre-prom dinner. After some lovely appetizers our main course came out. On cue, our son woke up. Mom took the first shift for eating while I kept our little monster’s hands out of the salad and away from the pasta. After my eating shift I learned something amazing: my son had a date.

My son’s date was a high school student and, noticing that he was now awake, came over to take him back to her table. I wish I had known… he didn’t even get her a corsage. How could he have known? At any rate, we’ve certainly got some good pictures for future events (graduation, wedding, etc.) and he certainly had a great time. He really enjoyed dancing and looking at the flashing lights. The music was frequently too loud for him but he eventually got into his rhythm. Once he understood what was going on he was ready for a good time. By the end of the night his tux pants were in the diaper bag and he was crawling into the middle of the dance floor to get his “boogie on.” A great evening!
