Hiking 101

hiking path

Hiking is one of my passions. I love to hike whenever I can and daily if possible. To me hiking is a rewarding experience benefiting both your body and mind. Hiking is an excellent way to increase your cardiovascular health and have an enjoyable workout. Going hiking won’t feel like a workout as you enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery around you.

It is good for your heart to walk. It is even better to add hills to your walking, something that most hiking trails can offer. The hills provide variation to your hike as well as intervals. Hiking is great because you can go at your own pace. If you are new to hiking there is nothing wrong with taking it slow and just doing a mile. If you have been hiking awhile, challenge yourself with steeper hills.

Hiking is good for your mind. You can’t go wrong with fresh air and beautiful nature around you. Hiking gives me time to think. When my friends and I hike, we don’t use our cell phones. We all agree that this helps us have a more peaceful and rejuvenating hiking experience.

Hiking is something people of most ages and fitness levels can do. It is especially fun to do with your kids during their summer vacation.

Here are some beginner tips to get you started:

1. Always bring water! Hydration is very important!

2. Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Layering is a good idea for changes in weather.

3. Hike with a trail map and GPS! Know when the park closes and plan your route ahead of time.

4. Wear comfortable, broken-in hiking shoes or sneakers.

5. Bring a buddy! There is always safety in numbers.

Happy hiking!
