He was born Sean Combs. Years later he morphed into “Puffy Daddy.” Then to “P. Diddy;” followed by the artist known as “Diddy,” and most recently: “Straight up P.” Confused? You aren’t alone. But, perhaps, Diddy’s (I can’t keep track, so I’m just going with Diddy) newest name will be easier to remember. Just call him: King… as in Burger King.
According to press reports, Diddy will soon be adding some sizzle to Burger King’s marketing efforts. The hip-hop mogul has agreed to join Burger King’s promotional efforts. The company (listed as the world’s No. 2 hamburger chain) says it is trying out a new marketing campaign, targeting the entertainment, fashion and music world.
Burger King officials say Diddy will be a prominent part of the new ad campaign: “Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is a pop culture icon, and we’re thrilled to be able to collaborate, using the breadth of his talents as an artist, entrepreneur and change agent to impact and inspire our guests.”
I’m no marketing expert, but this partnership seems like it has been in the works for a while. Burger King, which went public this summer, also is an official sponsor of the rapper-producer’s tour.
“I’m having it my way on this album, and it’s been a great journey for me, so I’m grateful for partners like Burger King Corporation that are helping me bring a fresh sound to my fans,” Diddy said. “They share my passion for being tastemakers and giving the people what they want.”
The company hasn’t said how they will use Diddy in the new commercials. I can only hope it goes over better than Pepsi’s infamous partnership with Michael Jackson. Maybe, they will have Diddy donning a crown during a concert performance—Whopper in one hand and onion rings replacing the diamond crusted ones he usually wears on the other?
