I had the worst hip pain during my pregnancy. It got so bad, that at one point, I couldn’t leave the house. Whenever I walked, I could hear this clicking sound that felt like it was coming from the center of my pelvic bones. It was really hard to cope. The worst part about it was trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. It was nearly impossible. I finally found a few tricks that helped alleviate the pain enough to get some rest.
The first trick I tried, which worked until I got too big to maneuver the pillows, was to place one or two pillows between my knees until the space between my knees was about the same as the width of my hips. I would then lie on my left side. Lifting my top leg with the pillows in this manner really helped take a lot of the pressure off my lower hip.
When it became too difficult to reach my knees to shuffle the pillows around, I switched to sleeping in a slightly reclined position on the couch. The idea was to get a lot of the weight off my back and shift it to my bottom. Sleeping at a 45 degree angle eliminated the need to flip from side to side, and the couch was soft enough that I did not get sore from sleeping like that for most of the night. I arranged pillows on the couch so that my knees would still be slightly raised and there was a soft wall around me in case I tipped over in my sleep. After all, I didn’t want to fall off the couch!
I’m sorry to say that I was not able to find any comfortable position to sleep in my last week of pregnancy. That probably has a lot to do with why I was crying all the time, “I don’t want to be pregnant anymore!”
