Hold Those Wedding Gifts for Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt

Well, that is at least until the wedding is legal. While the couple appeared this week on the cover of US Weekly with the title “Heidi & Spencer Elope!” we find out now that the wedding wasn’t legal. The two finally acknowledged today that their “wedding” ceremony that was held in Cabos San Lucas last week was symbolic and not legally binding.

I should have known these two attention hogs would not just quietly elope because they loved each other. Oh, by the way, a spread of the “wedding” was featured in this week’s US Weekly. Wonder how much the magazine had to pay for THAT?

Montag and Spencer
were quoted in US Weekly as saying, “We had a beautiful ceremony here…officiated by a minister and photographed by the hotel photographer.” They added that “like other elopements that happen outside the country, we’ll take care of the legal details when we get home,” although they didn’t say when and where they would seek to make the marriage official.

For their Mexican marriage to be legal, they would have had to have had a marriage license and taken part in a separate civil ceremony, neither of which they bothered to do, so California won’t recognize the marriage as legal. Normally, when couples wish to get married in Mexico, they have to obtain a health certificate and provide official translations of documents such as a birth certificate. This usually takes about five days. Because Montag and Spencer said their vows before a minister and didn’t have a civil ceremony, their marriage won’t even be recognized internationally.

Montag’s sister Holly told MTV that everyone in the family is upset and were caught off-guard by the wedding. Making the best of it, “The Hills” executive Liz Gateley said the wedding and honeymoon would be shown in upcoming episodes of the show.

Lucky us, we will get to see a fake wedding and a sham honeymoon!
