Holey Donuts: Too Good to be True

Holey Donuts is known for making low fat delicious donuts. The company has been featured in People Magazine, Everyday with Rachael Ray, The Diet Detectives, amongst others for their amazing donuts. These little donuts from Heaven contain no artificial sweeteners, no trans-fat and over 1/2 the amount of fat and calories than regular donuts.

I was intrigued by the idea of a low fat donut but I didn’t have high hopes. I expected an artificial disappointing substitute for the real thing. The type of diet food you tolerate because it’s the closest thing to what you are craving. Even so, I was super excited to get my taste buds on these donuts.

Santa came in the form of a Fed Ex man and dropped off my donuts right at my door. I quickly tore open the box to reveal this insulated foam cooler containing boxes of donuts surrounded by dry ice. I looked at my son and he looked at me, both with the same gleam in our eyes that said “MINE” just as surely as a two year old claiming a toy. I immediately said, “go get your sister!” Yes, my clever way of getting him out of the picture while I had the first glimpse and pick of the lot. I grabbed a frozen cinnamon roll and headed for the microwave. The cinnamon roll was huge and beautiful! Then, I had my first taste. I was in complete shock. My kids stood looking at me with mouths open in disbelief by my outburst of joy. My mind was flooded with images of the Seinfeld low fat yogurt episode. You know that one, right? The creamy delicious frozen yogurt was supposed to be low fat and it turned out that was a lie…that episode, remembered? I was sure I was being fooled. Yeah, this is how they trick you. They give you the good stuff first and then wean you off of it slowly by replacing it with low fat, hollow tasting donuts. Sadly, I handed over a roll to each of my kids. I suppose I can retain my adult and role model status by sharing. My nine year old son said, “These are good. These aren’t just good they are better than the cinnamon rolls you normally bring home.” I couldn’t agree more. AT LAST, AT LAST, LET FREEDOM RING! I CAN HAVE MY DONUT AND EAT IT TOO! I then proceeded to eat more than I care to admit. However, my fat count was nothing to be ashamed of! Seriously, you can eat a whole box of the Cinnamon Bun Middles and still not eat as much fat in one regular cinnamon roll. Please do not eat a whole box though.
