Holiday Crafts: Better than Place Cards

Here is a really neat idea that your family members and friends will love. These crafts are basically used to mark place settings at the dining table for holiday dinner, but they are way cooler than typical place cards.

There are a few different variations to choose from, but both require pictures of your guests. Look through that old shoebox of photos and pull out some snapshots of relatives and friends from past holidays. Funny pictures are the best. If you live in a higher-tech household you probably have pictures on CD, so just print off some (I’m getting there, but I do still have some pictures in boxes!).

Next, you will want to make little frames for these photos. Now, you can either pick up tiny picture frames at any discount store to decorate them, or you can make your own frames. Heavy cardboard works and so does craft foam. Just measure and cut a small frame, maybe 4” x 3” at largest. Cut the picture down a bit smaller and trace it onto the cardboard or foam. Cut that section just inside the lines and remove. Set the picture face down and tape it from behind if desired. Then, attach another piece of cardboard or foam from behind.

Decorate your frames to make them festive. Stencil on loved ones’ names, or better yet, nicknames. These are great for Thanksgiving or any occasion. Place one beside each place setting and then add some tiny silk leaves, flowers, or greenery, sprinkle some confetti or glitter around them, or add some twisted ribbon.

Your guests will love these “better than place cards,” crafts. Each person can take home his or her special souvenir as a reminder of the wonderful time he or she had.

*Remember to take more pictures this year, so you’ll have more to choose from next time!
