Holiday Fun with the Family

After surviving yet another snow day with a house full of kids (most not mine), I definitely see why some parents take advantage of all the outdoor holiday-related activities offered this time of year.

Whether it’s a horse-drawn carriage ride down Main Street or a walking tour of Christmas lights at the zoo, tis the season to let your kids burn off steam while enjoying festive events.

Here’s a look at some kid-friendly holiday activities going on around the country right now:

MAINE

In Portland, Maine, families can tour the inside and outside of the legendary Victoria Mansion, which has been dolled up for the season. Local designers and florists have transformed the popular mansion into a magical place for all ages. This year’s theme is “Let the Christmas Bells Ring: Celebrating 25 Years of Christmas at Victoria Mansion.” In keeping with the theme, each room, plus the grounds of the pre-Civil War-era mansion, are elaborately decorated.

MICHIGAN

You and your kids can take a step back in time when visiting Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village. The annual event in Dearborn, Michigan, is perfect for kids of all ages. The event includes candle-lit paths, actors in costumes, artisan demonstrators, live entertainment, carriage rides and tours of Christmas light displays in Model Ts. In addition, kids can pet real reindeer, ice-skate, chat with Santa and enjoy a fireworks display.

MISSOURI

Tilles Park in Ladue, Missouri (located about 20 minutes west of downtown St. Louis), is once again hosting its annual holiday light show. More than one million lights deck out the 76-acre park. Highlights include a moving carousel of lights, a massive gingerbread house and a lake filled with lighted jumping fish. You can ride through the winter wonderland of lights in your own car or in a horse-drawn carriage.

COLORADO

If you are in Cascade, Colorado, for the holidays, don’t miss taking your kids to the North Pole. At the foot of Pikes Peak, sits a charming family amusement park with rides galore, including a thrilling Christmas Tree ride. Holiday music and festive food are also part of the deal.
