Holiday Gift Ideas: Compact Photo Printer

Digital photographers have new reason to celebrate this holiday season. Canon just unveiled a new compact photo printer that the avid shooter or scrapbooker would be thrilled to unwrap this holiday season.

The SELPHY CP740 Compact Photo Printer promises to print “superb digital images that will last for years to come.” The printer features a two-inch color LCD display, red-eye correction and multiple direct printing options that you can use without a computer. I have been eyeing this product since it came out a couple of months ago. I love the idea that you can take this printer with you on trips and print images on the fly. It sure beats having to find a computer and printer to make quality prints.

What’s more, the price (about $100) makes it an affordable gift idea. If you are into scrapbooking or crafting or just want to print out a few personalized postcards from your poolside lounge chair you can do so with this portable printer. The printer I tested had a sharp color LCD screen so I could clearly see which pictures I wanted to print and which I wanted to delete. Also, I liked that I could correct red-eye problems and fiddle with the enhancements prior to printing my images. The SELPHY is lightweight and prints borderless, lab quality, 4″x6″ image in less than a minute (about 58 seconds). The company also claims that if you use Canon quality paper and ink, the SELPHY Printer will produce images that resist fading for up to 100 years. (Though, I’m not sure how you would test such a claim.)

If you are a scrapbooker or know an avid scrapbooker, this printer would be an ideal gift. It allows you the flexibility of printing as you create a page. In addition, think about how easy it would be to tote along to cropping parties or other scrapbooking events. All it needs is your camera’s memory card and it can print images on the spot.
