The holidays are a great time to check out your local thrift stores. Here are some reasons why you’ll find some great treasures this time of year, and how you can take advantage of the deals.
If you have never shopped in a thrift store before, take the opportunity to do so now. That is because the month of December is an especially great time to go treasure hunting. Why? Well, for a number of reasons.
You will find a large array of merchandise as people are rushing to get their donations dropped off so they can claim the items on their taxes. The thrift stores also see a slow down of customers, since most people are out shopping for new items at the department stores. As a result, the thrift stores tend to run great sales to get the merchandise off of the shelf.
Many people are fixing up their homes for the holidays, deciding to redecorate in anticipation of holiday parties and family gatherings. They will be getting rid of furniture, home decor, towels, sheets, rugs and more.
Families routinely de-clutter their children’s toys before Santa comes to bring new ones. You’ll find lots of gently used items that needed to be donated simply to make room for more new toys.
Christmas decorations will come in by the tons, as people unpack their items, organize them and decide that they have too much. They may also donate Christmas items after the season, not wanting to pack and store them all. You’ll especially find ornaments and decor with the year printed or written on them. You can always erase or paint over the numbers.
Closets tend to get cleaned out in December, too. This is again because of the end of the year donation. Many people look at their wardrobe when they are dressing for festivities and realize they need a change. Others put off changing over their winter clothing until December. So look for lots of items, including baby clothing.
Happy Shopping!
