For many families the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend marks the last major BBQ of the summer season. If this is the case for your clan consider hosting more than just a traditional weenie roast.
The following recipes are easy to prepare but pack a real punch in the flavor department. They are both kicked up versions of the traditional hamburger, but instead of the standard meat, bun, ketchup and mustard these patties are loaded with the taste of the Hawaiian Islands and bacon and Colby-Jack cheese respectively.

MINI HAWAIIAN BURGERS
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef chuck
4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
4 canned pineapple slices
Salt
12 Hawaiian sweet or small dinner rolls, split (I like King’s brand, which is found in most markets)
Lettuce
Ingredients for Sauce:
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup pineapple preserves
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
Directions:
Combine ground beef and Worcestershire sauce in medium bowl and mix well. Shape into twelve 1/2-inch thick mini patties.
Combine sauce ingredients in small saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.
Place pineapple slices on medium hot grill or place on rack in broiler pan so surface of pineapple is 3 to 4 inches from heat. Broil 3 to 4 minutes, turning once and brushing with sauce. Remove pineapple; keep warm.
Place patties on medium hot grill (or rack in broiler pan so surface of beef is 3 to 4 inches from heat. Broil 7 to 8 minutes to medium).
Cut each pineapple slice into thirds. Line bottom of each roll with lettuce; top with a burger, then with a pineapple piece.
Makes 4 servings
BACON IN THE MIDDLE BURGERS
Ingredients:
2 pounds ground beef sirloin
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Pepper
1 small onion, minced
10 slices bacon, cooked
5 slices Colby-Jack cheese
5 burger buns
Directions:
Preheat grill to medium hot.
Mix ground beef, sauce, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Refrigerate.
Fry bacon and drain.
Form refrigerated beef mixture into 10 patties. On top of 5 patties, place cheese and 2 slices of bacon, being careful to keep cheese and bacon in center. Place remaining patties on top and seal edges of 2 patties. Refrigerate while the grill is heating to medium temperature.
Place burgers on grill, and cook 5-7 minutes on each side.
Makes 5 large burgers.
