Holidays: Family Games

Do you and your family members play games together often? Do you like card games or board games better? Maybe you don’t have a preference you just like playing together no matter what it is. Many families try to have a family fun night or family game night regularly so they end up accumulating plenty of options. If so, the holidays are the perfect time to get them out. If not, it’s never too late to start collecting games, from great classics to new and innovative ideas.

Check Your Games

It’s a good idea to get games out ahead of time and make sure all the pieces and the instructions are there. If you haven’t played something in a long time, it might also be a good idea to refresh your memory as to the directions. This will make it easier to explain the rules to guests if they would like to play but are unfamiliar with a particular game. If this is something you often do on holidays, consider picking up a new game to surprise everyone.

Agree on the Rules

It’s generally a good idea to make sure that every player understands the rules before beginning to play. Also, if your family goes by a different set of rules, make sure these are understood and agreed upon in advance.

Playing Cards

Playing cards and card gamesMake sure all the cards in each deck are present or pick up one or two new decks. You probably know several card games, and your guests might also teach you some new ones. Grab an extra deck for the kids so the grown up deck stays intact, or pick up a fun card game like Uno.

Set up a Game Area

It can be tricky trying to play a game at the dinner table. Desserts or coffee may remain on the table for some time after the meal. It may be simpler if you set up a card table or folding table (throw a tablecloth over it).
