What would you say if someone were to ask you what your parenting style was? There are some who would readily identify as a helicopter parent, or a “Tiger Mother”. Some parents would describe their style as authoritative, and others might say their style is traditional. What if you don’t feel like you fit into any of those boxes? Maybe your style is similar to Holy Flow parenting.
Holy Flow parenting is a concept that appears to have been created by Brooke Hampton. You can learn more details about her parenting style, her family, and more on her blog Barefoot Five. Like many parents, Brooke Hampton had been asked about her parenting style. I like that she came up with her own style, rather than try to fit her family into a pre-existing one.
Holy Flow Parenting is not specifically connected to a particular religion. I think it would be possible for religious parents to incorporate some of their values into a Holy Flow parenting style if they wanted to. I also think it would be easy for non-religious parents to use Holy Flow parenting as a guideline for how to raise their children in an authentic way. Some of you out there might already be doing it!
Brooke Hampton got the name of her parenting style, “Holy Flow”, from a book she read that was called Amazing Grace. It was written by David Wolfe and Nick Good. The book mentioned the concept of getting in the “Holy Flow”, and she found that it resonated with her. Your parenting style could be named after a concept that you strongly relate to. Go ahead and create your own!
What is Holy Flow parenting? One really good way to gain an understanding of it is to read over Brooke Hampton’s blog. She’s done an excellent job of describing it and has included several photos of her family. Some of this parenting style has to do with exploring nature and eating clean.
One key concept is to be present in the moment. Be consciously aware of the precious moments that you have with your children while they are young and still living under your roof. Take the time to enjoy the experience. This is a time in your children’s life that you will never get back. Be present for it now, while it is happening.
Overall, Holy Flow parenting means trusting yourself and your parenting choices. Listen to your “inner self” and let it guide your choices. Stop comparing your parenting style to those of other parents. Do what you know is right for you and your family. You can be an excellent parent without forcing your parenting style to fit into a socially approved and understood “box”. Go with the flow.
