As parts of the country endure severe winter storms, it is important to remember that even if these storms don’t directly affect your home and family, you never know when extreme weather may occur.
Freezing temperatures in California have recently destroyed citrus crops. Flooding has also been a big concern. Even in areas of the heartland where people expect low temperatures, wind, ice, and snow in January, the recent storms have proven devastating.
Sadly, over 50 people are known dead due to recent winter storms. Many are without power in freezing temperatures, and even with gas heat, blower motors on many furnaces are powered by electricity. Power can go out at any time, even when there is not a storm, but electric systems are especially precarious during bad weather.
Tree branches weighted by ice may fall onto power lines or ice the lines themselves may create problems. There are many reasons why power outages occur, but whatever the reasons, outages can be very dangerous. It may take from several hours to several days –or much longer- before power can be restored.
It is important to have a plan in place in case of emergency. Plan to stay with family or friends if your power goes out. Consider purchasing a home generator. Many homeowners in cold weather areas opt to have fireplaces installed. Those who have fireplaces need to keep them well maintained even if they aren’t used regularly so that they can be used for heat if needed.
Let’s send good thoughts (and prayers for those who pray) to the individuals and families suffering through these severe conditions. Let’s also remember those who have lost crops that they depend on to support themselves and their families.
Please, look for ways to be more prepared to protect your home and family in case of severe winter weather. You can find more information throughout the Be Prepared Blog, as well as related articles in other locations, such as some of those listed below.
