When you are looking for home-based work, you may be tempted to pounce on the first job opportunity that comes your way. While you may think that home-based work opportunities are scarce (because if they weren’t, wouldn’t everybody be doing it?), the reality is that there enough home-based work opportunities out there that you can afford to be selective. It is only natural to want to get a home-based job as soon as you can, but there can certainly be a down side to taking the first opportunity that comes your way.
There is an old saying that “beggars can’t be choosers”. This is definitely not a good attitude to take when you are looking for home-based work. If you think of yourself as a beggar, than what you will likely find in your search for home-based work are a lot of scams and a lot of so-called jobs that pay less than minimum wage. The fact that you want to work from home, or that you will be working part-time from home while you raise your children does not in any way diminish the value of what you have to offer. I feel that this is a very important topic to discuss because for a while I did fall into the trap of undervaluing myself and my work and thinking that others would not take me seriously because I was working from home, or working part-time while being a full-time stay at home mom.
Before you begin your job search, update your resume and really think about what your skills are and how much you are worth. Approach your search for home-based work with the attitude that you are a valuable individual with talents that an employer would be lucky to have working for them. Choose work that interests you, and that will compensate you adequately based upon your unique set of skills and work experience. Above all, choose work that you feel is a good fit for you as a person and for your life as a whole.
