Home Business Ideas for Educators

Tutor: Tutoring can be a lucrative field for a qualified individual. Having a teaching certificate, experience or degree in the area you tutor will put you a cut above the rest. You can advertise at libraries, schools and in the newspaper. Hourly fees vary among state to state so check the common rate and begin from there. Do not feel limited to tutoring only school children. Consider tutoring college students in classes you previously took or classes that pertain to your degree.

Reading Specialist: Are you an educator who studied specifically on reading? If so, you may want to consider helping students with reading difficulties. Consider offering testing for students who struggle in reading. Perhaps offer to speak at libraries, homeschool co-ops, or parenting groups on the subject of reading. Partner up with an optometrist for an expo or speaking engagement on how to determine a child’s reading issues and what to do about it. Offer tutoring to students who struggle with reading.

Homeschool Consultant: There is a market among homeschoolers for certified teachers to help them determine lesson plans, fulfill state homeschool law regulations, and help determine learning disabilities. Check your state’s homeschool laws to see if you can offer the service of looking for student portfolios for parents to turn into the state’s superintendent.

Home Daycare and/or Preschool: If you have decided to stay home with your own children, then perhaps you may want to open up your own home daycare or preschool. Experience in teaching is a plus for many parents seeking a home day care. Add in preschool classes and kindergarten readiness classes for an extra boost of income.

Teach other Teachers: Check your local community colleges, YMCAs, or libraries to see if they will allow you to hold a conference or seminar about classroom strategies, identifying learning disabilities, handling bullying, etc.
