Home Business – or Home Based Conglomerate?

I’ve spent the last five years searching for the perfect home business. I am a “frequent-flyer” on just about every internet forum related to work-at-home opportunities. Even when I was working nearly full-time in the direct selling industry, I was still scoping out the “next best thing”. Heaven forbid I miss an opportunity, right?

If I’ve learned anything from reading often frantic mothers searching for companies that they can join, franchises that they can purchase or businesses that they can start themselves is that the term “home-business” is often misleading.

I think “home-based conglomerate” is a more appropriate term for the average work-at-home mom or dad. Most are involved in numerous ventures at once. They sell products on Ebay, they take surveys for extra income, they dabble in direct sales, garage sales, writing, proofreading, tele-sales, transcription and other related money making enterprises.

I used to be a big fan of Donald Trump’s Apprentice program. I was really impressed by his brilliant cast full of lawyers, doctors, real-estate professionals, business owners and entrepreneurs.

Season after season, the same types of people were fighting to become Donald’s apprentice. They were always well dressed, neatly groomed, attractive professionals. Frankly, Donald made a big mistake by not choosing an average work-at-home mom. Perhaps he was afraid that his show wouldn’t be “sexy” enough if he cast a spit-up stained, messy-haired, pajama clad “mommy” on the show, but I personally feel that an average “WAHM” could have cleaned the clock of any of his previous show winners. Anyone can sell a house but how many people can make dinner…while writing an article…while wiping a nose…while preventing a fight, while selling her wares on the telephone to a new customer?
