Home Clutter Can Lead to a Cluttered Life

Clutter. Don’t you hate it? I do, but unfortunately, it’s a fact of life especially in busy families. No matter how neat we try to keep our homes, clutter tends to creep in. When it does, it makes everyone feel unsettled. No one can relax in a mess.

Clutter can also make it difficult to find the things we need. How many times have you purchased duplicate items, only to find them later? Not only does clutter cause everyone to waste time and money, both precious resources, but it also creates chaos that overlaps into other areas of our lives.

If your spouse spends an extra 15 minutes looking for his or her keys because they are hidden under a week’s worth of junk mail, your spouse may be late for work. Now, the day has started badly, and it may only get worse.

I’ll share a personal example. I am a work at home mom. My career is freelance writing, which obviously requires some concentration. When my work area is filled with clutter, like notes from school, my notes, pages from coloring books, and other assorted goodies, I do not concentrate very well. My mind quickly becomes as cluttered as my home. I also have to admit that I have missed at least one deadline because I could not locate pertinent notes when I needed them.

With these examples, we can see how clutter quickly creates a domino effect. When things like this happen, not only is it frustrating, but it may also lead us to become irritable with family members. Ridding our homes of clutter is one of the best ways to organize the rest of our lives so we can stay focused on the things that matter most.
