Home Improvement: Bloopers

No, I’m not talking about the sitcom named Home Improvement, I’m talking about my very own bloopers. Of course, there are other priceless moments I’ve witnessed during other people’s home improvement projects, but I’ll share one of mine.

I consider myself to be rather handy around the house. I mean, I’m definitely not afraid of power tools; in fact, I like them. My husband thinks I’m pretty cool because I like going to Home Depot as much as he does.

So, I was trying to figure out a quick fix for one of our doors, which wasn’t closing properly. I really needed to install a new doorknob, but I couldn’t find an exact replacement. I just wanted to do something with it, to make the door close securely, until I could order a new one.

I decided to put in a simple slide bolt. Five minutes and a few screws, could it be any simpler? No problem for anyone who has ever held a drill in her hands, right? The screws went in just fine and the job took no time at all. Everything was lined up perfectly and the bold slid smoothly into place. No problem.

Well, I thought it was perfect, until I tried to open the door, that is. Imagine my surprise when it wouldn’t budge! I forgot that there was an overhang about an inch wide on the edge of the door that rests on the doorframe, so I ended up screwing the door shut.

I’ll never hear the end of it. My husband still laughs about it and my kids will never let me live it down. Now, anytime they see me walk by with a power tool they take off to find my husband, and I hear them yelling, “Daddy, you better stop Mom; she’s got the drill again!”

One mistake and your good projects are all forgotten!
