Communication via intercom seems an almost surreal experience as disembodied voices communicate over different rooms of a house or office. Apart from the obvious security ramifications arising from being able to see or hear what is going on in other areas of your home, the convenience an intercom offers cannot be denied.
I live in a three-story house with two offices, one in the basement and one on the top floor. Before we installed an intercom in our home, I had to walk down two flights of stairs to inform my significant other that he had a call and then I had to walk back two flights in order to return to what I was doing before the call interrupted me in the first place. Try doing this a few times a day and you will see what I mean. Even though there was a phone on the lower floor, the ringer didn’t work well and well…let’s just say, that before the days of our intercom, this activity was included in my exercise regimen.
There are many different types of home intercom systems, which range from the very simple to high-tech sophisticated. Systems can be “voice only” or can offer instant stardom with video features. A “voice only” intercom usually features many units in different rooms, all of which are all connected to the main unit. The main unit is often found in a central living area of the home, such as the kitchen or living room. The “voice only” intercom allows you to speak to someone and hear his or her reply from any unit. If you want more, you can get really fancy and personalize your intercom time with accompanying music as well.
From the point of view of security, an intercom system can be utilized as a baby monitor. Since an intercom permits you to speak by turning on the unit in the baby’s room, you can not only listen in but also comfort the baby from another room until you can reach the nursery. Video home intercoms can screen specific areas in the home, like the garage or the perimeters of your home. These intercoms make it easy to check on children when they are playing in the yard and to find out who is at the door before you open it. Some systems are so cool that they will actually allow you to unlock the door after you see who is there! (I wouldn’t advise buying this system unless you are all paid up in your debts and have nice in-laws.)
So consider installing an intercom in your home. You won’t be sorry you did.
